Excerpt from Pinkerton Partners
The partners lost Rugger's tracks through an area of broken rocks and scattered boulders. Traveling fifty feet in front of Jake, the canyon suddenly yawned in front of Wiley. Wiley steered Buddy away from the edge, up a slight rise, then down the back slope to meet Jake. "I found the canyon." Wiley quickly dismounted, tied Buddy to a sturdy sagebrush, then approached the rim on foot. The canyon's depth staggered him and for some reason he felt it wanted to suck him into it. After tying Mac to a bush near Buddy, Jake ran toward Wiley. Wiley spun around and grabbed him. "Stop, Jake! You'll fall off the edge!" Jake looked into Wiley's horrified face and smiled, then glanced down at the river far below. His face froze. "Damn!" A horse galloped toward them from behind. Wiley spun around and saw Rugger Moras charging, gun drawn and pointed at them. He fired. Jake cried out, grabbed his chest and fell backward into the chasm. Seeing Jake disappear off the edge, Wiley yelled in horror, then from rage. Rugger shot again and Wiley felt a blow to the top of his head. He reeled and nearly passed out. As Rugger rode by him, Wiley shouted the Iroquois war cry, lunged at the horse, yanked Rugger out of the saddle and heaved him over the side of the canyon. Rugger's long trailing scream was lost in the roar of the river. Wiley felt blood stream down his face and into his left eye, then blackness overtook him. He dropped to the ground. |
