Home to Kentucky Excerpt from Home to Kentucky
Shirtless, Wiley left Doc Coulter's office and ran down the middle of the street, dodging wagons and crowds of people. Sweat ran down his chest and back as he yanked open the livery door and rushed inside.

"Jake, where are you? Jake, I can explain everything!"

A horse whinnied in the last stall.

Wiley climbed to the loft, Jake wasn't up there. He looked around and gasped. All Jake's things were gone! Seeing one of his own shirts wadded into a ball, Wiley grabbed it. The shirt felt damp in a few spots, and he noticed bloodstains on the cuff that hung down on the left. Wiley shook out the shirt, put it on and ran for the ladder. On his way down, he missed the bottom rung and fell to the floor on his back. He struggled to his feet, groaned from a sharp pain in his leg, then half-limped to the rear of the building.

Mac wasn't in his stall. Wiley rushed outside into the corral. Mac wasn't there.

Realizing Jake had left, Wiley felt faint. He sat down hard on Bill's chopping block and covered his face with his hands. He'd lied to the Man-Boy! Somewhere, far off, the song of a mourning dove penetrated the bustle of the valley.
