Excerpt from Bristlecone Peak...
Wiley followed Jake for a mile down the twisting path. Suddenly, Jake slowed Mac and took a hard left through a narrow passage between two rocks. After threading Buddy through the slot, Wiley gasped as he entered an open area surrounded by smooth boulders and tall aspens. On the far side, the rippling water of a pool, fed by a ten-foot waterfall, flung sparkles of sunlight into his eyes before boiling down a steep incline. Wiley stopped his horse and stared. He thought of "The Arabian Nights." They picketed the horses in the shade of an aspen grove and walked through the wide grassy area to the edge of the pool. "This is wonderful!" Wiley said. His voice echoed off the rocks. He grabbed at his shirt. "Let's get our clothes off." Naked, the two men dived into the chilly water. After swimming across the pool and back, Wiley stuck his head out of the water. Seeing the back of Jake's head, he yelled, "Jake, something grabbed me! Help!" He disappeared into the shimmering depths. Jake snapped his head around and saw nothing but the widening circles in the water where Wiley had been. "Wiley? Where are you?" When Wiley didn't surface, Jake yelled, "Wiley, what grabbed you? Wiley?" Suddenly, Jake felt something furry from behind slip between his legs and nestle into his crotch as two arms encircled his waist from the back. "Yeow! Wiley, it's got me too! Help!" Jake reached down and felt something round...with two ears. "Damn! What the--" He stuck his head under water and saw Wiley looking up at him. He could feel Wiley's beard tickling his nuts. Jake laughed and came up coughing. He lunged behind him, grabbed Wiley in the crotch, and the pair wrestled under water until they ran out of breath. "Damn, Wiley, you scared the shit right outta me," Jake gasped. "Where?" Wiley scanned the surface of the water. "I don't see anything floating anywhere." Jake laughed and dove at Wiley, tackling him. Wiley's body went limp, and Jake dragged him a few feet until they were behind the falls in chest-deep water. If anyone had been watching, they would have seen the silvery outline of two men locked in a tight embrace behind the glistening curtain of water. From then on, whenever they could, while Joe snored in the shade at the end of a hot day, the blood brothers raced their horses to the hidden lagoon and splashed around until they turned blue from the cold. |
